It’s a new year and I’m so grateful to see it. My 2023 was filled with a diverse range of experiences, both personally and professionally. From adventurous trips – I tried skiing for the first time, a mini cruise to Oslo, I saw Usher in Paris, and I discovered the paradisiacal isles of Bornholm and Gran Canaria – to meaningful time with loved ones throughout the year. Celebrating significant milestones – TEN YEARS of this blog! – to working on some really amazing but challenging projects, it was really a year of professional growth and fulfilment. Even my intentional approach to dating enabled me to meet some cool people even if I am still a single pringle for now.
Nevertheless, the final quarter of the year felt to me, and for so many others worldwide, like watching an endless horror show, trapped in a loop, witnessing the atrocities of “war” inflicted upon the people of Gaza, while also becoming more aware of the unimaginable suffering experienced by countless others in Sudan, Congo, Ethiopia, Yemen, and other places. Despite efforts to donate, speak out, read, research, and engage in discussions, the feelings of helplessness and sorrow have never been more overwhelming. It has been particularly distressing to see that these actions seemingly have no impact on the relentless onslaught of violence. Even worse, it is disheartening to witness political leaders particularly in the West, who formerly championed “human rights” and “civil liberties,” remain on the sidelines or, even worse, actively contribute to the violence through diplomatic support and the supply of arms.
In countless ways, I find myself keenly aware of the abundance of blessings in my life. I am deeply thankful for the gift of another year of life, for my health, and for the stability that surrounds me. My gratitude extends to my parents, siblings, and all my loved ones, as well as to every comfort and advantage I am fortunate to have, including the ability to share this message. On a personal level, there’s at least one big milestone and just so much more that I am looking forward to in 2024. Not gonna lie, I’m super excited for this year. But stepping back and looking on a broader level, as we begin the new year, my earnest hope is for an end to the violence and suffering in Gaza, the West Bank, Yemen, Sudan, Congo, Ethiopia, Nigeria and all conflict-ridden areas worldwide. May this year usher in justice, liberation, and dignity for every oppressed individual and community. And finally, I pray for greater tolerance, empathy, and love within our societies, wherever we find ourselves.
