I was talking personal style with a friend recently and mentioned that I felt as if I had less opportunities to “get dressed up” living in Aarhus and as such, my personal style had changed somewhat. When she asked why I felt that way, I explained that it just seemed like people’s style choices here were more casual, more laid-back, more androgynous than what I was used to. Therefore, I felt the need to pare back my style to suit my surroundings so I didn’t stick out…well more than I already did. I also didn’t feel like I had any real occasions to wear my “fancy” clothes to so I was saving my outfits for fear of wasting them on non-events. My friend’s response gave me pause for thought. She argued that I already stick out because I don’t look like a typical Danish person so dressing up or down doesn’t really make a difference. The concept of “wasting outfits” didn’t really make sense because as long as I create opportunities to wear them, there is no waste. And lastly, why should anyone but me decide whether I get dressed up to the nines every day or not at all? All her arguments were valid and I am still reflecting on them. Will I get back to the Lagos style “Sunday best” shots? Not sure just yet. I do want to play around with my clothes as I have in the past but these cobbled streets don’t want a sister to be great in her heels so I may pass on those. But I can definitely see about creating some opportunities for dressing fancy. Watch this space…
Do you “save” your outfits like me? Or do you create opportunities for you to dress as fancy as you like? Or are you just a fancy person in general? Shout in the comments below!
