I will let you in on a secret: whilst doing a little research on Gdansk before my trip, I came across some pictures of Ulica Mariacka (aka Mariacka Street) and immediately knew I wanted that to be my location for my Sunday best pictures. I mean, how could I pass up the opportunity to use the beautiful backdrop of the street’s porches? Ulica Mariacka should probably be renamed “Amber Street”. Apart from being one of the most Instagrammable streets I have ever encountered, it’s also where you go in Gdansk to buy amber. It’s located just behind the enormous Bazylica Mariacka (St Mary’s Basilica), which happens to be the biggest brick church in the world. The street is no less entrancing, and whether you come by day or by night, you cannot help but be sucked in by the magic of the street. By day, it’s a bustling centre of trade for amber and silver, and by night, the street’s cafés and bars light up the cobblestones, amplifying the ambiance already created by the gothic architecture. Each house has its own porch, with its own designs and decorations. Gargoyles abound and there are even a couple of dragons. You would never guess that the street was almost completely destroyed and subsequently rebuilt following the Second World War. I can just imagine that walking down this road being the same as it would have been a hundred years ago and the facades of the houses lends to that vision. If you are even slightly into architecture, this street will send you swooning with the abundance of intricate touches to each building.
